Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, held a meeting with Mr. Luke Mayers, Chargé d’Affaires of the Canadian High Commission, to discuss Pakistan’s ongoing flood situation and potential avenues of bilateral cooperation.
Mr. Mayers expressed profound empathy and solidarity with the people of Pakistan over the tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the recent floods.
During the meeting, Dr. Malik apprised Mr. Mayers that nearly 3.6 million people have been displaced. He noted that while relief operations are progressing, the greater challenge will arise once the floodwaters recede, exposing large-scale devastation.
Both sides also deliberated on the impact of floods on food security, including the importance of food regulations, trade opportunities, and the potential role of GMO seeds in strengthening agricultural resilience.
Dr. Malik further underscored the Ministry’s focus on digitizing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to improve efficiency, enhance transparency, and ensure robust environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of Pakistan and Canada’s shared commitment to advancing cooperation in climate resilience, food security, and sustainable development.
