Gilgit, Sep. 12 — The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the revised PC-1 of the 34.5 megawatt Harpo Hydropower Project, a milestone initiative aimed at ending the chronic energy shortage in Baltistan.
The project carries a total cost of Rs. 34.34 billion, with €70 million in financial assistance being provided by the German Development Bank (KfW) and the French Development Agency (AFD).
According to officials, the project will serve as a sustainable, environment-friendly source of power generation based on local resources. It is expected to provide reliable electricity to thousands of households in Skardu and surrounding areas, significantly reducing the acute power shortfall during winter months.
Special Assistant for Information, Eman Shah, hailed the approval as a result of the prudent leadership of the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan and the government’s determined efforts.
> “The Harpo Hydropower Project will not only ensure electricity supply but also generate employment, strengthen the economy, and boost infrastructure development,” she said.
She further added that the project stands as proof that Gilgit-Baltistan is no longer a neglected region but a vital part of the country’s development agenda. The government, she said, is prioritizing initiatives that promote self-sufficiency in energy and create opportunities for youth.
Eman Shah also expressed gratitude to the federal government, KfW, AFD, and other partners for their support, emphasizing that their cooperation made this milestone possible.
The Gilgit-Baltistan government congratulated the people on this historic achievement and reaffirmed its commitment to pursue projects that ensure long-term prosperity and self-reliance for the region
