Islamabad, Sept. 11  Chinese researchers are set to introduce new sesame varieties in Pakistan that have been bred and cultivated on a large scale in China for further screening to ensure the best germplasm.

Speaking to China Economic Net (CEN), Prof. Yuan Guobao, Chairman of the Hubei Technical Market Association, said that China’s sesame consumption is increasing year by year, creating immense opportunities for Pakistani farmers and exporters.

China’s annual sesame demand is around 1.5 million tons, of which only 300,000 tons are produced domestically, with the remaining 1.2 million tons imported. Recognizing this huge demand, Pakistan’s sesame exports to China have surged significantly in recent years.

Prof. Yuan highlighted that sesame is highly drought-resistant and has a short growing period, making it well-suited to Pakistan’s conditions. He suggested the adoption of specialized sesame seeding machines and herbicides to enhance efficiency and reduce labor intensity for local farmers.

Over the past five years, Pakistan’s sesame production has risen by 455% to 1.119 million tons, while exports to China increased by 327% to 760,000 tons, generating $1.073 billion in revenue.
