Karachi September 3: Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh, Syed Salman Shah, held an important meeting with a high-level delegation of the World Food Programme (WFP) to discuss the province’s preparedness for the potential flood situation.  The WFP delegation was led by Mr. Thomas Conan, Deputy Country Director, and included Ms. Hilde Bergsma, Head of Sindh Office, and Mr. Rustam Khan, Programme Policy Officer.

During the meeting, DG PDMA Syed Salman Shah briefed the delegation on the special measures taken by the Sindh government to tackle possible flood emergencies. He emphasized that the protection of human lives, evacuation of people from vulnerable areas to safer locations, and safeguarding of livestock and crops are the government’s top priorities. He appreciated the role of international organizations and extended gratitude to WFP for its continued partnership. “We are building a strong coordination mechanism with international and national NGOs to ensure a swift and effective response in case of any disaster,” he stated. He recalled that the contributions of WFP and other global partners during the 2010 and 2022 floods were of immense importance and helped provide critical relief to millions of people.

The WFP delegation reaffirmed its commitment to stand by the Sindh government in any emergency situation. Deputy Country Director Thomas Conan assured that WFP will extend full cooperation in providing timely food assistance and relief support to affected communities.   DG PDMA added that with the cooperation of international partners, the effectiveness of relief operations will be further enhanced, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive immediate assistance in times of crisis.
