Sukkur, September 1, 2025 : A high-level meeting was held in Sukkur to address immediate security concerns for personnel stationed at Indus River embankments during the ongoing flood crisis in Sukkur and Larkana divisions. Secretary Irrigation Zarif Iqbal Kheero presided over the meeting with commissioners, DIGs, deputy commissioners, and SSPs of both divisions to formulate an immediate security strategy.

The meeting prioritized the safety of irrigation staff and officers deployed at vulnerable points along the river. District officials were directed to finalize a joint security action plan by day’s end in coordination with commissioners and DIGs. This plan will assess the need for additional security forces and, if required, a prompt request will be made to higher authorities for deployment from other areas.

Kheero identified Ronti, Qadirpur, Beji, Machka, and Din Waro embankments, along with Faridabad and Al-Raja Jagir embankments in Khairpur, as vulnerable areas needing reinforced security measures. He stated that officials are continuously assessing other critical locations, including Naudero Nusrat, Moria, Aqil Agani, Abad bund, and low-lying areas of Moenjodaro, which require substantial security arrangements, including joint police and ranger check posts.

Sukkur Commissioner Abid Saleem Qureshi affirmed ongoing rescue and relief operations, emphasizing the need to resolve all pending security matters. Dedicated 24/7 control rooms have been established at the commissioner and deputy commissioner offices for improved communication. He stressed the importance of safeguarding lives and livestock, particularly with the potential for floods exceeding 1 million cusecs, which could impact a vast population. Flows up to 700,000 cusecs are expected to have a more localized impact.

Larkana Commissioner Tahir Hussain Sanghi indicated that if staff shortages arise, a request for additional manpower will be submitted to senior authorities. DIG Sukkur directed all SSPs to develop comprehensive security plans for identified sensitive locations based on current police deployments. This assessment will determine the demand for additional personnel.
